Infertility in cystic fibrosis

Both men and women with cystic fibrosis (CF) can suffer from infertility.

Most men with CF are infertile. The sperm canal is blocked or absent except in 2-3 percent. A test can be done to confirm the presence of sperm in semen in mature men with CF mature.

Women with CF can have thicker cervical mucus making it harder for sperm to reach the eggs to become pregnant. Women with CF may also suffer from irregular periods which can reduce the release of eggs from the ovaries. The good news, once pregnant, most women have a normal pregnancy.
