Latching on is the term used for a baby drawing the nipple and enough of surrounding areola into his mouth and sucking breastmilk using his lips, cheeks, tongue, jaw, and palate.
• lips are turned outward
• nose and chin touch breast
• about 3/4" beyond nipple is in mouth
• if lower lip is pulled down, tongue is visible
