Diarrhea diet for toddlers
What to eat when stools are loose
-Diarrhea (increased liquid poops) can be caused by a virus, a change in diet, undercooked food, medication, or by bacteria passed by unwashed hands.
What to feed toddlers if they have diarrhea:
- Give:
- No milk products
- Bananas, ripe
- Rice, rice cereal rice cakes, rice in soup
- Applesauce. The fiber in applesauce attracts water in the intestine and firms the stools.
- Whole grain bread and toast
- Whole grain cereal – oatmeal, cream of wheat
- Potatoes, mashed
- Boiled chicken, chicken broth
- Crackers, especially mashed in soup
- Noodles and macaroni
- Jello (homemade) or popsicles
- Oral rehydration solutions (ORS) – Pedialyte, Rehydralyte
Give plenty of fluids and call your pediatric healthcare provider
