The difference between adults and children

The causes in of acute pancreatitis in childhood are very different from the causes in adults. In children, the causes are often:
- Infections from viruses
- Injuries to the abdomen
- Inherited conditions
- Stones in the gallbladder (more common in adults)
- Medicines (i.e. seizure medicines)
Causes in adults include:
- Heavy alcohol use
- High levels of triglyceride or calcium in the blood
- Cigarette smoking
- Cancer of the pancreas
- Gallbladder stones
