The causes in of acute pancreatitis in childhood are very different from the causes in adults. In children, the causes are often:

  • Infections from viruses
  • Injuries to the abdomen
  • Inherited conditions
  • Stones in the gallbladder (more common in adults)
  • Medicines (i.e. seizure medicines)

Causes in adults include:

  • Heavy alcohol use
  • High levels of triglyceride or calcium in the blood
  • Cigarette smoking
  • Cancer of the pancreas
  • Gallbladder stones
